Aberdeenshire band, The Broken Creels return with their new single “Austerity Kills” on 12th September 2025. Known for their blend of alt-rock and Americana with a psychedelic edge, the four-piece are turning their focus to one of the most pressing issues of the day – austerity.
Recorded at Aberdeen’s York Street Studio with long-time producer and engineer Steve Curtis, “Austerity Kills” combines socially charged lyrics with jangly guitars, a tense rhythm section and lead-singer, Colin Clyne’s distinctive vocal delivery. At its core is a chant-ready refrain; “They’re killing lives, Jesus Christ, don’t they know that austerity kills.”
The Broken Creels feature Colin Clyne (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Daz Alexander (drums), Brian Black (bass) and Tom Ward (guitar/keys). They formed on Scotland’s North-East coast in 2022 bring together decades of live and studio experience to create an unforgettable sound.
Their first two singles made an immediate impact. “Friend or Foe” reached No. 1 in the UK iTunes Rock Chart in April 2023, followed by “Killing on the Rail Line”, which peak at No. 2 six months later. The band’s growing reputation has seen them appear at The Tartan Heart Festival (Belladrum) and earn praise from peers and critics alike:
· “…very powerful…” – Kim Wilde
· “…they kicked serious psychedelic ass!!” – Rob Ellen (Belladrum Festival)
· “…thunderous and anthemic…” – Indie Band Guru
With “Austerity Kills”, The Broken Creels show how their songwriting can carry both weight and urgency, marking another step forward for one of Scotland’s most talked-about emerging acts.
“Austerity Kills” is out 12th September 2025 on all major streaming platforms.
An evening of gritty, heartfelt alt-Americana and bluesy rock, with great song writing at the heart of everything they do, as The Broken Creels — Colin Clyne, Tom Ward, Daz Alexander & Brian Black — take the stage at one of Aberdeen’s most iconic live music venues; The Blue Lamp.
Aye aye folks, the end of the year usually signifies a plethora of best of lists, and it’s always great to make any of them tbh!
However…massive thanks to Michael Park of The International Americana Music Show for selecting my 2014 song ‘The Never Ending Pageant’ as part of their best of the last decade!
Brilliant honour and truly appreciated!! Always felt that tune was a little under appreciated!!

My friends over at Emerald Sunday (Dundee based rock band) are releasing a new single called ‘Saltwater’ on the 29th of September. It’ll be on all digital platforms. I’m honoured to make a guest appearance on the harmonica.
It’s a lovely acoustic song that was written by Wesley Watts. Wesley was a good friend of Alan in the band and sadly he passed away earlier this year before he got a chance to record any of his songs. It’s a lovely tribute to him, please go and check out the band and the song when its released!
I’m delighted to be making my way back to Glasgow to open for American hit songwriter Jesse Terry at the Rum Shack on thursday the 5th of October. It promises to be a great night.
Fresh from my recent trip to The Belladrum festival where I had a lovely weekend and a successful gig on the Free Range Acoustic Stage, I’m back on duty for The Broken Creels again during August.
First up, we head to The Twa Tams in Perth on the 12th August, we kick off at 7pm.
On the 25th of August we support Scottish Americana stalwarts The Wynntown Marshalls at Aberdeen venue The Blue Lamp, it promises to be a great evening.
The Broken Creels will be supporting Aberdeen’s legendary guitarist Gerry Jablonski and his Electric Band on Saturday night (Saturday 3rd June 2023) at Aberdeen’s Cafe Drummond’s. The band have had a run of shows there now and are starting to slowly build some momentum and interest in what we are all about.
Hope to see you there, tickets can be bought below..
It was a funny one as it consisted of songs from two separate sessions.
Three of the songs came from a session in 2008 that was going to be an album called ‘Torn Between Two Everyrhings’, overall we did 8 or 9 full band songs and decided to keep ‘Good for something’, ‘Into my Garden’ and ‘Peace in my mind’.
However, i put them on the back burner to go out and play live as much as i could as I wasn’t vocally ready or good enough to sing those songs at that point.
The other session was held in Signature sound studios (San Diego) sometime in January 2010. Myself, James Hood & Enrique Platas went in with Alan Sanderson to record 10 songs, completely live and acoustic, just like we had been playing the pubs and clubs of Southern California at the time!
The album was mixed in two sessions, one at The Way studio in London (August 2009) and the other at Hyde Street studios in San Francisco (February 2010) It was mastered at Universal studios some time in March or April 2010 and released 10th May 2010.
It was such a great learning curve and wonderful experience…thanks to all that were involved in it!
